Traineeships in the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Translation
The Commission’s Directorate-General for Translation (DGT) offers in-house traineeships lasting five months for graduates who wish to acquire an understanding of its work and gain professional experience in the field of translation or terminology.
Those selected are assigned to a translation unit or to one of the DGT’s administrative units, e.g. the unit responsible for library, terminology and translation support.
Trainees receive a grant of €1,047.55 per month.
Traineeships at the Commission run from 1 March and from 1 October. The deadline for submitting applications are 15 February 2010 for the traineeship starting in October 2010 and 1 September for the one starting in March 2011.
The demand often outstrips the number of traineeships available. Only 2 trainees can be accepted for each session (4 per year).
If you wish to apply for a traineeship, there are three basic requirements. You must:
(1) hold a full university degree (minimum BA),
(2) be able to translate into your mother tongue or main language from two of the European Union’s official languages, one of which must be French, English or German;
(3) not have completed a traineeship lasting more than six weeks in another European Union institution or body
If you meet the above requirements, fill in the electronic form available on the Traineeships Office’s website (http://ec.europa.eu./comm/stages). The site is accessible at all times and the various stages in the procedure are set out clearly there. Note that for the session starting on 1 October 2010 the form must be filled in before 15 February 2010.
Selections are made on the basis of the written application form. Applications are only valid if the application form has been duly signed and sent together with motivation letter and required annexes by 15 February 2010 (date of post mark will count).
